Early Career

Hedda Berntsen, a Norwegian alpine skier, was born in Oslo in 1976. She debuted at the international level in 1995 at FIS races in Bjorli. In 2000, Berntsen made her World Cup debut, placing 23rd in the slalom.

Breakthrough in Slalom

Berntsen achieved her first major success at the 2001 World Championships in Sankt Anton, winning the bronze medal in slalom. She consistently ranked in the top 11 in World Cup races that season, breaking into the top 10 later in the year.

Disappointment at the Olympics

Selected for the Norwegian Olympic ski team for the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, Berntsen faced disappointment when she missed a gate during her slalom race and failed to finish. That season concluded with her earning 12th place in the World Cup standings.

Career Decline

Berntsen's results declined in the following years. At the 2003 World Championships, she placed only 18th. She was replaced by Lene LØseth in the Norwegian team and announced her retirement from competitive skiing.

Transition to Ski Cross

In 2007, Berntsen made a remarkable return to competition by switching to ski cross, a demanding freestyle discipline involving simultaneous racing of four skiers on a complex course.

Success in Ski Cross

Berntsen's debut in ski cross came at the 2007 World Championships, where she placed 9th. She went on to finish 10th at the World Championships the following month. In the 2007-08 season, Berntsen achieved two second-place results and a silver medal at the Winter X Games XII.

Olympic Glory

Berntsen's transition to ski cross culminated in a silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. In the final, she lost only to Canadian Ashley McIvor. The victory represented a triumph for Berntsen, who had endured previous Olympic disappointments. French skier Marion Josserand won the bronze medal at the age of 23.
