Early Life and Career

Eduard von Lade was born into a wine merchant family in Geisenheim, Germany in 1817. He pursued a career in banking and export in Hamburg and Paris, eventually amassing a comfortable fortune that allowed him to retire at the age of 44.

Monrepos Estate and Scientific Pursuits

In 1861, von Lade established the Monrepos estate in Geisenheim, a retreat where he indulged in horticulture. He established a fruit and grape nursery and founded a school of horticulture and viticulture. However, his true passion lay in astronomy, particularly selenography, the study of the Moon. He built an observatory on his estate, dedicating himself to charting the lunar surface.

Lunar Mapping and Legacy

Von Lade's meticulous observations and mapping resulted in the creation of a lunar globe, which is now a rare and valuable collector's item. His work contributed significantly to the advancement of selenography. In 1901, he was honored with the title of Baron.

Lunar Crater and Asteroid

In recognition of his contributions to lunar science, a crater on the Moon was named after him. Additionally, the asteroid 340 Eduarda was named in his honor.

Later Life and Legacy

Eduard von Lade spent his later years in Geisenheim, where he passed away in 1904. His legacy continues to inspire astronomers and scientists to this day. His work on the lunar surface remains a testament to his dedication and scientific curiosity.
