Helen Ripa: A Trailblazing Paralympian and Multi-Disciplined Athlete
Early Life and Swim CareerAt the age of 14, Helen Ripa was diagnosed with a tumor in her right leg. She underwent amputation above the knee and turned to swimming as part of her rehabilitation. She competed for the Nacka Swimming Club from 1988 to 1993, winning several Swedish championships and earning a total of 32 medals, including 10 golds. Ripa also represented Sweden at the 1992 Paralympic Games in swimming, although she did not medal.
Transition to Cycling and Canoe Racing
Due to injuries, Ripa retired from swimming and pursued other interests such as interior design. However, she eventually returned to sport after meeting her future husband, Ronny Pettersson, who encouraged her to ski, cycle, and row. Ripa transitioned to canoe racing in 2015 and became a member of the Brunnsviken Canoe Club.
Paralympic Glory in Cross-Country Skiing
In 2003, Ripa's passion for sports was reignited. She began competing in cross-country skiing, representing Sweden in the World Cup in 2012/2013. At the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, she achieved a historic victory, winning the gold medal in the 15 km race. It was her first Paralympic gold medal and Sweden's first victory in Winter Paralympic cross-country skiing since 1994. Ripa also claimed a silver medal in the mixed relay with Sebastian Modin.
Mountain Bike Orienteering
Ripa represents the Haninge Club in mountain bike orienteering. She has achieved notable results, including second place at the 0-Ringen tournament in 2013, the Swedish Championships in 2014, and the Swedish Championships in 2015.
Paralympic Success in Canoe Racing
Ripa made her Paralympic debut in canoe racing at the 2016 Rio Games, where she competed in the inaugural event for para-canoeists. She emerged as the European champion in the K-3 class at the 2016 European Championships, but placed fifth in the 200m K-3 sprint final at the Paralympics.
Media Appearances and Recognition
Ripa has shared her story on Swedish Radio's "Sommar i P1" and SVT's "Sommarpratarna." She also participated in the Swedish version of the TV show "Fort Boyard" with Thomas Wassberg and Jonas Hallberg. For her achievements at the 2014 Paralympics, she was nominated for the Bragdguldet, Jerringpriset, and Breakthrough of the Year awards by Svenska Idrottsgalan.
