Helle Thorning-Schmidt: A Trailblazing Danish Politician
Early Life and EducationHelle Thorning-Schmidt was born in 1966 in Virum, Denmark. She graduated from the University of Copenhagen and later obtained a Master's degree in Politics and Public Administration from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. While in Bruges, she met her future husband, Stephen Kinnock, the son of British politician Neil Kinnock.
Political Career
Entry into PoliticsThorning-Schmidt joined the Danish Social Democratic Party in 1993. She earned a PhD in Political Science the following year and served as Chair of the Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party in the European Parliament from 1994 to 1997.
Member of European Parliament (MEP)
In 1999, Thorning-Schmidt was elected to the European Parliament (EP). She became a prominent figure, serving on several committees and as Vice-Chair of the EU-Latvia Interparliamentary Committee.
Leadership of the Social Democratic Party
Party LeaderIn 2005, Thorning-Schmidt was elected to the Danish parliament, the Folketing. The Social Democratic Party lost the election, prompting its leader, Mogens Lykketoft, to resign. Thorning-Schmidt emerged victorious in a direct election to replace him as party leader.
