Early Life and Education
Henk Gerard Sol was born on August 11, 1951, in Borger, Netherlands, near Groningen. He earned his Master's degree in econometrics, operations research, and information systems from the University of Groningen in 1974. In 1982, Sol received his doctorate, with his dissertation on "Modeling in Information Systems Development."
Academic Career
From 1974 to 1984, Sol worked as a senior lecturer at the University of Groningen, where he helped develop and validate a Master's program in information systems at the School of Economics and Management Science (SEMS).
In 1984, he became a Professor of Information Systems Development Technology at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), where he established an information systems chair for one of Europe's leading information engineering schools. In 1992, Sol was appointed Professor of Systems Engineering at TU Delft. Since 2004, he has been Professor of Business Engineering and ICT at the University of Groningen.
Institutional Leadership
In 1992, Sol founded the new School of Engineering, Policy Analysis, and Management at TU Delft. He served as its Dean until 1998, when he prepared its merger with the Faculty of Technology, Policy, and Management.
From 1999 to 2004, Sol remained Scientific Director of the Delft Institute of Information Technology and Systems Engineering (DITSE). In 2004, he founded the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Groningen, serving as its Dean until 2008.
Editorial and Committee Work
Sol has been a member or on the editorial boards of several journals, including "Decision Support Systems," "Electronic Journal of E-commerce," and "Organizational Science." He has also served as an editor for "Communications of AIS" and "Information and Management."
Sol is a member of the Technical Committee of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), specifically in the IFIP TC 8 committee responsible for promoting research and practice of all concepts, methods, and techniques related to information systems in organizations.
Consulting and Other Activities
Since 1972, Sol has worked as a management consultant for a wide range of national and international organizations, including government agencies. He is a chairman of the supervisory board of directors for several companies, including Joh. Enschedé BV and Groningen Airport Eelde NV.
Awards and Recognition
The Dutch professor is a recipient of the IFIP Outstanding Service Award and the IFIP "Silver Core Award." In 2003, the Faculty of Technology, Policy, and Management at TU Delft established the annual "Henk G. Sol Award" for faculty and PhD students, given for the best publication or research.
Publications
Sol is the author of hundreds of publications on ICT, management information systems, decision support systems, and telematics.
