Ronny Johnsen: Norwegian Football Legend
Ronny Johnsen is a renowned Norwegian footballer and coach who made a significant mark in the world of football during his playing career.
Early Career and Club Success
Born on June 10, 1969, in Sandefjord, Norway, Johnsen began his football journey with local club Vollerenga. In 1989, he moved to Lillestrom, where he established himself as a reliable defender. In 1993, he signed for Blackburn Rovers, a newly formed club in the inaugural Premier League season.
Triumph with Blackburn Rovers
Johnsen quickly became a key player for Blackburn, excelling in the right-back position. He played a pivotal role in the club's historic Premier League title victory in the 1994/95 season, missing only two matches. His versatility, as he could also play at center-back, made him even more valuable to the team.
Record-Breaking Transfer to Manchester United
In 1997, Manchester United paid a then-record fee of £5 million for Johnsen, making him the most expensive defender in British football history. He won two Premier League titles (in 1999 and 2000), an FA Cup, and the Champions League in 1999, although he missed the finals of both tournaments due to injuries.
Return to Blackburn and Scottish Success
After struggling for regular playing time at Manchester United due to the arrival of Jaap Stam, Johnsen returned to Blackburn in 2000, initially on loan. He helped the club regain promotion to the Premier League in 2001 and win the League Cup in the following season, captaining the team to victory.
In 2003, Johnsen moved to Scotland to play for Rangers, where he spent one season before retiring.
International Career
Johnsen represented Norway at the international level, making 100 appearances and scoring 9 goals. He played in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, as well as Euro 2000.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing, Johnsen took up coaching. In 2005, he became manager of Norwegian club Lyn, guiding them to a third-place finish in his first season. In 2008, he moved to Lillestrom, where he remained until 2012.
