Henri Konan Bédié: Second President of Côte d'Ivoire
Rise to PowerHenri Konan Bédié assumed the presidency of Côte d'Ivoire on December 7, 1993, following the death of the country's first president, Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Bédié had long been considered Houphouët-Boigny's heir apparent.
Unsuccessful Presidency
In 1995, Bédié was elected president with 96.44% of the vote, with nearly all other candidates boycotting the election. His presidency was marked by economic and political turmoil.
Overthrow and Later Career
Bédié was overthrown in a military coup led by Robert Guéï on December 24, 1999. He participated in the 2010 presidential election, initially leading in the polls with 42% of the vote. However, he ultimately finished third with approximately 25%. Notably, he later supported opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, who had been his political rival in the 1990s.
