Early Career
Karting (2000-2003)Niko Karilainen embarked on his racing journey in karting from 2000 to 2003, honing his skills and developing a passion for motorsports.
Formula BMW (2004-2005)
In 2004, Karilainen made the transition to the German Formula BMW Championship, where he remained for the 2005 season. Despite his efforts, he managed to accumulate only five points over the two years.
Asian Success (2006)
Seeking greater opportunities, Karilainen ventured to Asia in 2006 to compete in the Formula 3 and Formula Renault series. He found immense success in this region, securing a second-place finish in the Asian F3 championship.
GP2 Debut (2007)
In 2007, Karilainen had the chance to test his mettle in the GP2 Series with BCN Competicion. He made his debut at Istanbul Park but was replaced by his recovered compatriot Markus Niemela the following round.
Formula Atlantic (2008)
Karilainen crossed the Atlantic in 2008 to join the Formula Atlantic Championship with Jensen MotorSport. He finished the season 17th in the standings, with his best result being a 10th place at Trois-Rivières.
FIA Formula 2 (2009)
In 2009, Karilainen joined the revived FIA Formula 2 series, becoming only the second Finn after Keke Rosberg to participate in this prestigious competition.
