Biography of Henry "Trey" Obering III
Early Life and EducationHenry "Trey" Obering III was born in 1951 in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering. During his time at the university, he also completed the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program.
Military Career
After completing his education, Obering joined the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1973. From 1975 to 1979, he flew the F-4E Phantom fighter jet and held various administrative positions at different air bases. In the 1980s, Obering worked as an engineer at NASA and was involved in the US space program, including the launch of 15 space shuttles.
Leadership Roles
In the 1990s, Obering held several administrative positions within the USAF and was in charge of various special projects. In 2001, he began working at the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and became its director in 2004. As the director of the MDA, Obering was responsible for overseeing the agency's missile defense programs and integration efforts.
Later Career and Awards
In 2008, Obering was replaced as the director of the MDA by his deputy, Patrick O'Reilly, as decided by President George W. Bush. Throughout his career, Obering received numerous awards and honors, including the Legion of Merit medal. He is married and has two sons and a daughter.
