Early Life and EmigrationEnrico Armetta was born on July 4, 1888, in Palermo, Sicily. At the tender age of 14, he stowed away on a ship bound for America, arriving in New York City as an undocumented immigrant. However, an Italian-American community member intervened and paid Armetta's immigration fees.
Broadway Beginnings
To support himself, Armetta took on various menial jobs, including working as a waiter and pants presser at the esteemed Lambs Club. There, he encountered Raymond Hitchcock, a Broadway actor and producer who was impressed by Armetta's potential. Hitchcock cast him in a small role in the Broadway show "A Yankee Consul."
Hollywood Success
In the 1920s, Armetta moved to Hollywood, where he quickly found success in the film industry. He played stereotypical Italian characters with fiery personalities and exaggerated gestures, often as barbers, restaurateurs, or small-business owners. Armetta's warm and relatable immigrant characters endeared him to audiences.
Silent to Sound Transition
Armetta's Italian accent added charm to his characters, making the transition to sound films seamless. He became highly sought after, appearing in an astonishing 24 films in 1934 alone. Many small roles were written specifically for Armetta, who remained unparalleled in his niche.
Notable Roles
In 1938, Armetta starred in the musical comedy "Everybody Sing" alongside Judy Garland, Allan Jones, and Fanny Brice. In 1941, he played a memorable Italian patriarch shopping for beds in the Marx Brothers' comedy "The Big Store."
Personal Life and Legacy
Armetta married in 1920 and had three children. He died of a heart attack in San Diego, California, on October 21, 1945, at the age of 57. Enrico Armetta left behind an indelible mark on Hollywood as a beloved character actor who brought Italian-American culture to life on the big screen.
