Biography of Gemma Osmolovskaya

Gemma Osmolovskaya, a Russian actress, made her screen debut in 1957. It was during the post-Stalin era when the Soviet Union saw the release of the melodrama "A Story of First Love" directed by Vasily Levin, in which the aspiring actress played the role of young girl Olya. The film was remarkably bold for its time, as it addressed the taboo topics of orphanhood and single motherhood. The creators of the film sincerely and honestly portrayed the first love of schoolchildren. Osmolovskaya's character, after her mother's death, decides to leave sports school and find work. Olya's friend, Mitya (played by Kirill Stolyarov), unwilling to leave her in distress, invites her to live with him. Olya's sensitive and tactful parents support their son's decision. However, dirty rumors spread in school, and Mitya, unable to withstand the first test, allows Olya to leave his home. The film also weaves in another storyline, which was unimaginable for films of that time – the passion of a physical education teacher for a student. Considering all of this, it is astonishing how a film with such a script could make it to the screens, as Soviet censorship was very particular about morality in relation to the younger generation. Nevertheless, the film was released and made Osmolovskaya famous. Immediately after her first film, Gemma Osmolovskaya appeared in the lyrical comedy "The Street is Full of Surprises" directed by Sergei Sidelyov. The actress played the role of Katerina, the fiancee of the main character, Vasya Shaneyshkin, who was portrayed by the already popular Leonid Kharitonov.

A Romance on and off Screen

It often happens that actors carry their on-screen relationships into real life. This is exactly what happened between Osmolovskaya and Kharitonov. A romance sparked during the filming of the movie, leading to Leonid leaving his first wife, Svetlana Kharitonova (also an actress). However, the marriage between Gemma and Leonid was short-lived. Even the birth of their son, Alexei, could not save it. Like all idols, Kharitonov was completely unfit for family life, and the couple soon divorced. The roles in the films "A Story of First Love" and "The Street is Full of Surprises" remained Osmolovskaya's most famous works in cinema. The melodrama "Sleepless Night" by Isidor Annensky and the film adaptation of Yuri Lysenko's novel, "We, Two Men," in which she appeared in subsequent years, turned out to be ordinary films, not deserving of much attention.

Continued Career

In 1964, Osmolovskaya graduated from the School-Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre and was accepted into the troupe of the Russian Academic Youth Theatre, where she continues to work on stage to this day. She has not appeared in films since then.
