Sir Ernest Walker
Education and Early CareerErnest Walker was a British musicologist who graduated from the Royal College of Music. He studied under renowned musicians such as Hubert Parry (music history), Walter Alcock (organ), and Walford Davies (counterpoint). Walker began his career in journalism in 1905 as a contributor to The Times.
Music Criticism and Academia
In 1911, Walker became the chief music critic for The Times. Concurrently, he taught at Cheltenham Ladies' College and later became the Headmaster of St Michael's College in Tenbury Wells. At St Michael's, he specialized in training boys in church music and published a history of the college in 1943.
Leadership and Publications
Walker served as the President of the Church Music Society and the English School of Church Music. He penned numerous publications, including a biography of Johannes Brahms (1908), a study on Brahms' chamber music (1933), and his seminal work on music history, "The Growth of Music" (1912-1916).
Editorial Contributions
Walker edited the third (1927) and fourth (1940) editions of the prestigious Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. His expertise in various musical fields was evident in his collection of essays, "On Learning Music and Other Essays" (1940).
