The 13th Duchess of Alba
Patron, Muse, and Subject of GoyaDoña María del Pilar Teresa Cayetana de Silva-Álvarez de Toledo y Silva, the 13th Duchess of Alba, was a renowned Spanish aristocrat best known as a patron, muse, and subject of the legendary artist Francisco de Goya. Contemporaries described Alba as both exceptionally beautiful and intelligent.
Wealth and Marriage
Upon becoming Duchess in 1776, Alba's marriage to José María Alvarez de Toledo y Gonzaga, 15th Duke of Medina-Sidonia, elevated her to one of Spain's wealthiest women, rivaled only by the House of Osuna.
Eccentricity and Connection to Goya
Alba's eccentricity and association with Goya solidified her place in history. Goya created a series of renowned portraits of the Duchess, primarily at the estate of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, after her husband's passing. Speculation arose regarding an intimate relationship between Alba and Goya, fueled by the nature of certain portraits and her eccentric personality.
'The Naked Maja' Controversy
One of Alba's most controversial connections is to Goya's painting, 'The Naked Maja,' depicting a fully nude woman. While some believe Alba posed for the painting, it has been widely disputed. In recent scholarship, Robert Hughes theorized that the painting was a composite of multiple models, including possibly Goya's mistress. Alba's descendants have also challenged her involvement, attempting to uncover the matter by examining her remains.
Death and Legacy
The Duchess of Alba died under mysterious circumstances in July 1802, initially attributed to tuberculosis. Subsequent theories, including poisoning, have emerged, inspiring the film 'The Naked Maja.' Having no biological children, Alba's adopted daughter, María de la Luz, inherited her vast wealth, while the ducal title passed to her relative Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stuart, becoming the 14th Duke of Alba.
