Henry Metcalf: A Pioneer in Management Theory

Early Life and Education

Henry Metcalf was born in Warsaw, Illinois to Thomas and Mary Metcalf. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1894 and a doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1897.

Academic Career

In 1899, Metcalf joined the faculty of Tufts College in Massachusetts as a professor of political science. There, he began collaborating with Mary Parker Follett on management theory. He also taught at the Garland School of Homemaking in Boston and the New York Edison School.

Research and Development

In 1914, Metcalf published his research on industrial organization and employee welfare systems, based on his travels throughout Europe and the United States. In 1917, he took a leave of absence to further study industrial and educational institutions.

"Personnel Administration"

In 1920, Metcalf and Ordway Tead published "Personnel Administration: Its Principles and Practice." This seminal work on management theory emphasized the importance of employee morale, job satisfaction, and cooperation in increasing productivity.

Later Career

After moving to New York in 1919, Metcalf became a professor of economics at the New School for Social Research and director of the personnel management department. He remained an influential figure in management theory throughout his career, shaping the development of the field.
