Biography of Henry Rosovsky

Henry Rosovsky is an American economist and university administrator. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University from 1973 to 1984 and from 1990 to 1991. He was also a professor of economics at Harvard and served as the university's president from 1984 to 1987. After stepping down as dean in 1987, Rosovsky became a member of the Harvard Corporation, the university's governing organization.

Early Life and Education

Rosovsky was born in the Free City of Danzig, into a family of Russian Jews. He grew up speaking Russian and German. When he was 13, his family moved to the United States. In 1949, Rosovsky earned a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Ten years later, in 1959, he obtained a doctoral degree.

Academic Career

From 1965 to 1984, Rosovsky taught economics, history, and Japanese studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He also worked in Japan and Israel and served as a consultant for various organizations, including the U.S. government, the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, and UNESCO.

Contributions to Higher Education

In 2000, Rosovsky joined the operational group on higher education and social issues, which was created by the World Bank and UNESCO to study the development of higher education in developing countries. The group's report highlighted the critical state of educational systems in poor countries and called for additional investments, significant reforms, and a global reassessment of education standards.

Publications

Rosovsky is known for several notable publications, including "Capital Formation in Japan" and "Quantitative Japanese Economic History" in 1961. His book, "The University: An Owner's Manual," was highly successful. In this book, Rosovsky drew on his experience in educational leadership to provide practical advice and shared amusing personal anecdotes.
