Orley Ashenfelter: A Pioneer in Labor Economics
Early Life and EducationOrley Clark Ashenfelter was born in San Francisco on November 18, 1942. He attended the private liberal arts Claremont McKenna Men's College.

Academic Career
After graduating, Ashenfelter embarked on a distinguished academic career. He is currently the Bendheim Professor of Economics and Director of the Industrial Relations Section at Princeton University. His research interests encompass labor economics, econometrics, and law and economics.

Ashenfelter is widely recognized as the inventor of the "natural experiment" method, a technique used to analyze causality in economic research. He has also served as the director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S. Department of Labor, a visiting professor at the University of Bristol, and a Guggenheim Fellow.
Honors and Awards
Ashenfelter has received numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to economics. In 1982, he was awarded the Frisch Medal from the Econometric Society. He is also the recipient of the Labor Economics Prize from the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) and the Mincer Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Labor Economists (SLE).
Editorial Roles and Affiliations
Ashenfelter has been a fellow of the Econometric Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Society of Labor Economists, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has also served as an editor of the "American Economic Review."
Contributions to Wine Economics
In addition to his work in labor economics, Ashenfelter has made significant contributions to the field of wine economics. He co-authored a study with Richard E. Quandt analyzing the results of the 1976 Paris Wine Tasting, a groundbreaking event that challenged the established reputation of French wines. Currently, Ashenfelter serves as the President of the American Association of Wine Economists (AAWE) and as the Editor of the "Journal of Wine Economics" published by Cambridge University Press since 2012.
Involvement in Czech Economic Education
Since the early 1990s, Ashenfelter has actively supported the development of graduate education and research in economics in the Czech Republic. Starting in 1999, he became a member of CERGE-EI, a joint initiative of Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic that offers master's and doctoral programs in economics. From 2001 to 2007, Ashenfelter also served as a member of CERGE-EI's Executive and Supervisory Committees.
In recognition of his contributions to CERGE-EI, his scholarly achievements, and his support for research in transition economics and the economics of education at Charles University, Ashenfelter was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university in 2014.
Personal Life
Ashenfelter has three daughters: Gillian Ashenfelter, a biology and marine ecology teacher at Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco; Bevin Ashenfelter, a professor of economics at Occidental College in Los Angeles; and Tracey Ashenfelter, a freelance artist based in San Antonio, Texas. Gillian and Bevin are both graduates of Princeton University, while Tracey earned a graduate degree from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University.
