Breakthrough Roles

Thomas's second major project was the film "Misunderstood" (1984), a poignant drama about the relationship between a widowed father (played by Gene Hackman) and his son, who previously lived with his mother. Thomas demonstrated his understanding of the emotional aspect of the story and portrayed his character accordingly. He then starred in the sophisticated Hitchcockian thriller "Cloak & Dagger" (1984), which was filmed in San Antonio and became his last Hollywood work for the next ten years.

Return to Acting

After a four-year hiatus, Thomas shone in the Australian adventure film "Frog Dreaming/The Quest" (1985). He returned to the screen in 1988, appearing in the Canadian film "Murder One," a story revolving around three escaped prisoners who only wanted to steal a car but got caught up in a new turmoil involving a mass murder. With his knack for portraying lonely and introverted young characters, Thomas was a suitable and intriguing choice for the role of Norman Bates in the television thriller "Psycho IV: The Beginning" (1990).

Later Career

Among other television films featuring the actor were "The Curse of the Starving Class" (1995), "Indictment: The McMartin Trial" (1995, as Raymond Buckey), and "Riders of the Purple Sage" (1996). In 1993, Thomas returned to American cinema, appearing in a supporting role in the intense alien-themed drama "Fire in the Sky" (1993). He gained more recognition for his role as Aidan Quinn and Brad Pitt's brother in the film "Legends of the Fall" (1994), where his idealistic character experienced his passionate impulses on the battlefields of World War I.

Thomas continued to impress with memorable performances in independent films such as "Niagara, Niagara" (1997) and "The Suicide Kings" (1997). He then had a brief streak of criminal roles in films like "Fever" (1999), "Quick" (2001), and "Dead in the Water" (2001).
