Biography of Herb Edelman

Herb Edelman, an American actor of theater, film, and television, was born on November 5, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York. Before pursuing a career in acting, he studied veterinary medicine at Cornell University, but dropped out after a year. He then served as a radio announcer in the United States Armed Forces and later attended Brooklyn College, which he also left without completing. Edelman worked as a hotel manager and taxi driver before his chance encounter with director Mike Nichols, who gave him a breakthrough role on Broadway in the play "Barefoot in the Park" in 1963. He went on to reprise his memorable role as Harry Pepper in the film adaptation of the play in 1967, starring alongside Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Edelman also appeared in the film version of Neil Simon's play "The Odd Couple" in 1968 and "California Suite" in 1978.

Television Career

Over the course of three decades, Edelman had a prolific television career, participating in various ensemble casts, playing supporting roles, and making guest appearances. Some of the notable TV shows he appeared in include "That Girl," "Love, American Style," "The Streets of San Francisco," and "Maude." He portrayed Jordan Price in the series "Cannon," Moe Epstein in "Welcome Back, Kotter," and Jack Cohen in "Kojak." Edelman also made appearances in popular shows like "Fantasy Island," "Cagney & Lacey," and "MacGyver." In 1976, he became one of the main cast members in the children's sitcom "Big John, Little John," and prior to that, he starred in another American sitcom, "The Good Guys," alongside Bob Denver. From 1984 to 1988, Edelman played the role of Richard Clarendon in the series "St. Elsewhere." Additionally, he made ten appearances in the show "Murder, She Wrote" between 1984 and 1985, mostly portraying Lieutenant Artie Gelber. One of his last film projects was Peter Crane's 1995 movie "Cops n Roberts."

Personal Life

Herb Edelman was married to soap opera actress Louise Sorel from 1964 to 1970. He had a romantic relationship with Christina Pickles from the mid-1980s until his death from emphysema in 1996.
