Early Life and Musical RootsBorn on September 22, 1892, in an affluent and musical family, Herbert Janssen was raised in an elaborate castle on the Rhine. Despite his parents' expectations for him to pursue law, Janssen's passion for singing ultimately prevailed.
Debut and Early Success
Janssen made his debut as Herod in Schreker's "Der Schatzgräber" at the Berlin State Opera in 1922. His talent was quickly recognized, and he rose through the ranks, notably embodying Wolfram von Eschenbach in Wagner's "Tannhäuser" (1923-1924).
European Triumphs
Janssen became an esteemed guest artist at prestigious opera houses and festivals across Europe. From 1926, he regularly performed at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. He also graced the stages of the Vienna State Opera, the Semper Opera in Dresden, and the Opera Garnier in Paris.
Flight from Nazi Germany
In 1938, Janssen was forced to flee Germany as a political refugee due to his alleged anti-Nazi stance. Despite an unverified claim of Nazi party membership, there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary. American soprano Ilona Simon-Muller recounted Janssen's refusal to dine with Hitler at a performance in Bayreuth. His wife, Erna, reportedly declared her indifference to his whereabouts when interrogated by the Gestapo.
International Acclaim in the United States
Janssen settled in New York City in 1939 and joined the Metropolitan Opera. He retired from singing in 1951 and remained in the United States, never returning to Germany. After his retirement, he became a highly sought-after vocal teacher.

Herbert Janssen passed away in New York on June 3, 1965. His legacy continues to inspire as one of the most celebrated baritones of his era.
