Early Military Career
On January 1, 1934, the young German officer embarked on his naval career as a fenrich. By January 1, 1936, he had earned the rank of lieutenant.
World War II Service
Commander of U-58 (February 1939 - June 1940)During the early stages of World War II, the officer commanded the U-58 submarine. Under his leadership, the submarine embarked on eight patrols, spending a total of 130 days at sea.
Commander of U-94 (August 1940 - May 1941)
In August 1940, the officer took the helm of the U-94 submarine. He led the submarine on five patrols, spending 178 days at sea. His exceptional service earned him the prestigious Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on May 14, 1941.
Staff Officer and Temporary Submarine Commander (August 1941 - June 1943)
In August 1941, the officer was transferred to the headquarters of the submarine fleet command. In December 1942, he joined the High Command of the Navy (OKM). Despite his new assignments, he briefly commanded the U-516 submarine from June 24 to 30, 1943.
Final Mission and Tragedy (July 1943)
On July 1, 1943, the officer was assigned the command of the submarine cruiser U-847. He led the submarine on its maiden voyage, but tragedy struck on August 27, 1943. The U-847 was sunk by aircraft launched from the escort carrier USS Card. The entire crew of 62 souls perished, including the officer.
Legacy
During his military career, the officer sank 16 ships totaling 82,109 gross register tons (GRT). His service in the Kriegsmarine was marked by bravery, dedication, and ultimately, the ultimate sacrifice.
