Early Life and EducationHerman Wilhelm Bissen, a Danish sculptor of German descent, arrived in Copenhagen at the tender age of 18. He initially enrolled in the Royal Danish Academy of Art's architectural drawing class but soon transitioned to sculpture under the influence of the renowned Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Artistic Journey in Italy
In 1824, Bissen embarked on a pivotal journey to Rome via Berlin, where he met Christian Rauch. His prolonged stay in Italy for over a decade significantly influenced his artistic style, leading him to shift from Romanticism towards Neoclassicism under Thorvaldsen's guidance.
Return to Denmark and Artistic Evolution
Upon his return to Denmark in 1834, Bissen became a professor at the Academy of Art. This marked a transition in his style as he embraced Realism. In 1848, he triumphed in a competition against J.A. Jerichau to design the monumental "Danish Soldier."
Monumental Masterpieces
In 1862, Bissen created the iconic "Idestedt Lion" monument to commemorate the Danish victory in the First Schleswig War. Originally erected in Flensburg, the sculpture was later taken by the Prussians after they occupied the city in 1864. After World War II, the "Idestedt Lion" was returned to Denmark and now resides prominently outside the University Library in Copenhagen.
