Early Life and Education

Born in Leipzig, Hankel's father, Wilhelm Gottlieb Hankel, was a physics professor at the University of Halle. In 1849, the family moved to Leipzig where Hankel attended the prestigious St. Nicholas Gymnasium.

In 1857, Hankel embarked on his mathematical studies at the University of Leipzig, where he received instruction from the prominent mathematicians August Möbius and his own father. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he further pursued his education at the University of Göttingen, studying under the tutelage of Bernhard Riemann, and later collaborating with Karl Weierstrass and Leopold Kronecker in Berlin.

Academic Career

Hankel's doctoral dissertation, entitled "Über eine besondere Klasse der symmetrischen Determinanten" (On a Special Class of Symmetric Determinants), was defended in Berlin in 1861. His groundbreaking research earned him widespread recognition within the mathematical community.
