Biography of Hernan Jorge Crespo

Early Life and Club Career

Hernan Jorge Crespo is an Argentine footballer who currently plays for Inter Milan and the Argentine national team. He made his debut for River Plate in the 1993/1994 season, scoring 13 goals in 25 matches and helping his team win the Argentine championship. In 1994, he became a champion again with River Plate. In 1996, Crespo led River Plate to victory in the Copa Libertadores, scoring a brace in the first leg of the final. He also won a silver medal and became the top scorer of the tournament with 6 goals at the 1996 Olympics as part of the Argentine national team.

Success in Italy

In August 1996, Crespo moved to Parma and scored 12 goals in 27 matches in his first season. In 1999, he won the Italian Cup and the UEFA Cup with Parma, scoring the first goal in the final against Marseille. In 2000, he transferred to Lazio for a record fee of £35.5 million and became the top scorer in Serie A with 26 goals in his first season. In 2002, he joined AC Milan for £40 million as a replacement for Ronaldo. In his first season at Milan, Crespo scored 7 goals in 18 Serie A matches and 9 goals in 12 Champions League matches.

Stint at Chelsea and Return to Milan

In August 2003, Crespo moved to Chelsea for £16.8 million but struggled to adapt to the club, scoring 12 goals in 31 matches in all competitions. After Jose Mourinho took charge of Chelsea in the summer of 2004, Crespo was loaned to Milan. He regained his form at Milan, scoring 10 goals in the season. However, his two goals in the final of the 2004/2005 Champions League were not enough to secure victory against Liverpool. After a successful season at Milan and Chelsea's unsuccessful search for a high-profile striker, Crespo returned to Chelsea. This time, he quickly adapted to English football, scoring a goal in the first match of the season and several important goals in Premier League and Champions League matches. In total, he scored 14 goals in the 2005/2006 season.

Later Career and International Achievements

In August 2006, Crespo was loaned to Inter Milan. In December 2006, he scored his 125th goal in Serie A. He made his debut for the Argentine national team in February 1995 and went on to represent his country in the 1998, 2002 (scoring 1 goal), and 2006 (scoring 3 goals) World Cups. Throughout his career, Crespo played 60 matches for the national team and scored 32 goals. He is the highest scorer for the Argentine national team in World Cup qualifiers. He also participated in the 2007 Copa America but missed the remaining matches of the tournament due to injury. Crespo was included in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living footballers.
