Hernán Rengifo: A Peruvian Striker in Poland
Hernán Rengifo is a Peruvian footballer who currently plays as a striker for Lech Poznań in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Born and raised in Chachapoyas, Peru, his passion for football began at a young age.
Early Career in Peru
Rengifo joined his first club, Virgen de Chapi, in his hometown. He later played for several teams in the Peruvian capital, including Universitario, Unión Huaral, and Universidad San Martín. With Universidad San Martín, he won the Peruvian First Division championship in 2007. Overall, he made 146 appearances in the Peruvian First Division, scoring 59 goals.
Transfer to Poland
On June 11, 2007, Rengifo signed a three-year contract with Lech Poznań. He made his Ekstraklasa debut on July 28 against Zagłębie Sosnowiec and scored his first goal for the club against Górnik Zabrze on August 11. He scored 12 goals in his first season.
Recognition and Playing Style
In 2008, Diaro Ojo recognized Rengifo as the best Peruvian football player playing abroad. Known for his ability to be in the right place at the right time in the penalty area, he excels in aerial play, ball control, and uses both feet effectively. Off the field, he is known for his camaraderie and sense of humor.
Personal Life
Rengifo is known by the nickname "Charapa," a playful reference to his provincial origins in the Amazon basin. His colleagues at Lech Poznań call him "Renifer," a simplification of his surname. Like a turtle, he is a cautious driver, preferring to move slowly. He is learning Polish to connect with his new teammates and enjoys Poland's seismic stability in contrast to his earthquake-prone homeland.
Rengifo's family has joined him in Poland. He is married and has three sons: Sebastián Fabiano (born 2000), Nicolás (two years old), and Matías Daniel (born January 2, 2009). His wife underwent a cesarean section for the birth of Matías Daniel, but the child is healthy and brings his father great joy.
