Early Life and Education
Ute Vinzing was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, into a musical family of six children. Her parents were doctors with a passion for music. Each child was taught to play an instrument, and Vinzing chose the violin. She went on to study law at the University of Freiburg before pursuing vocal studies at the Freiburg Academy of Music.
Operatic Debut and Career
Vinzing made her operatic debut as Rosina in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaroin 1971. The following year, she joined the Deutsche Rheinische Oper in Düsseldorf. Her international debut came in 1976 as Leonore in Beethoven's Fidelioat the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and as Giorgetta in Puccini's Il Tabarroat the Metropolitan Opera.
Breakthrough and Wagnerian Roles
Vinzing's performance as Marie in Alban Berg's Wozzeck(1975-1976) caught the attention of conductor Herbert von Karajan. He invited her to perform the title role in Richard Strauss's Salomeat the Salzburg Festival in 1977. She later sang the Empress in Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten.
Vinzing became particularly renowned for her Wagnerian interpretations, including Brünnhilde in The Ring of the Nibelung, Isolde in Tristan und Isolde, Elsa in Lohengrin, and Senta in The Flying Dutchman.
Late Career and Collaborations
Vinzing also performed in works by Weber, Strauss (Elektra), Janáček (Jenůfa, Káťa Kabanová, The Makropulos Affair), and Shostakovich (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk). In 1999, Luciano Berio composed the title role in his opera Cronaca del luogospecifically for her, which premiered at the Salzburg Festival. Vinzing collaborated with renowned conductors and orchestras throughout her career.
Legacy and Passing
Ute Vinzing died in Tokyo, Japan, in 2004, while giving a lecture. She was buried in Vienna. Vinzing is remembered as an exceptional soprano known for her powerful voice, dramatic interpretations, and elegant stage presence. She earned the title "Duse of the Opera Stage" for her acting prowess and impact on the operatic world.
