Hisashi Koze: A Miraculous Journey in the Vast Ocean
Early Life and CareerHishashi Koze was born in Japan around 1970. His connection with the sea began at a young age, and he eventually became a diving instructor while also working as a professional diver for various organizations. With years of experience under his belt, Koze never imagined that a routine diving expedition near Borneo would turn into a life-threatening ordeal.
The Ordeal
As usual, a three-person diving team set off on a boat towards a dive site. However, due to the extended underwater operation, the boat crew decided to return to shore, assuming that the divers would be back soon. Koze emerged just in time to witness his boat disappearing into the distance.
Despite his desperate attempts to catch up with the boat and failing to locate his fellow divers, Koze collected his thoughts and determined the direction towards the nearest land. For an entire day and most of a night, he fought against the waves, slowly making progress through waters known for their abundance of sharks and other predators.
Against the Odds
"Throughout the time, I kept thinking that I must survive, I have to make it to the shore," Koze recounted in an interview with Malaysian newspaper The Star shortly after being admitted to the hospital. Dehydrated and exhausted, his first thoughts were about the fate of the other divers, who had been rescued by a fishing boat after only a few hours.
Koze himself claimed that he had not seen any vessels within a radius of several kilometers. Seasoned sailors, however, attribute this to the tricks of the sea and the stress that can impair a person's perception. Koze was fortunate to have reached land with his sanity intact.
To determine his direction, the rescued diver relied on the waves and the position of the sun, which he always committed to memory before each dive in anticipation of emergencies.
Recovery and the Future
After a few days under medical observation, the divers were released from the hospital. When asked about his future plans, Koze surprised reporters by declaring that he had no intention of giving up the sea, even during his most challenging moments. However, he planned to take a short break and postpone his next dive for at least a week.
Koze's extraordinary feat demonstrated the resilience of the human spirit, proving that the will to live can triumph over even the vast and mysterious ocean.
