Joaquín Cortés: A Celebrated Flamenco Artist and Ambassador
Early Life and InfluencesJoaquín Cortés was born into a gypsy family in Córdoba, Spain. His father hailed from the North African Romani group known as the "Moros," while his mother's distant ancestors migrated from Russia. At the age of 12, inspired by his uncle, the renowned bailaor (flamenco dancer) Cristóbal Reyes, Cortés began his dance training.
National Ballet and International Success
In 1981, Cortés and his family moved to Madrid. At the age of 15, he joined the Ballet Nacional de España, becoming a soloist at the age of 18. During his tenure with the company, he performed in prestigious venues around the world. Following his departure in 1988, Cortés collaborated with acclaimed artists such as Maya Plisetskaya, Peter Schaufuss, and Sylvie Guillem.
Founding His Own Company
In 1992, Cortés established his own company, Joaquín Cortés Ballet Flamenco. His debut show, "Cibayí," garnered international acclaim and toured extensively. In 1995, he presented his second show, "Pasión Gitana," and made his film debut in Pedro Almodóvar's "The Flower of My Secret."
Recognition and Advocacy
In 1999, UNESCO designated Cortés as an "Artist for Peace." In 2000, he launched the "Stop Antigypsyism" campaign. In 2006, he became the European Parliament's second Romani Ambassador, representing the interests of millions of Romani people in the region. He has been an ardent advocate against the use of derogatory terms associated with Roma.
Global Performances
Cortés has performed extensively in Russia and has also graced the stages of prestigious venues around the world. His recent show, "Gitano," showcases his captivating dance style and deep connection to his Romani heritage.
Personal Life
Cortés is married to Spanish model Mónica Moreno. They welcomed their son, Romeo, in 2018, and their second son, Andrea Leone, in 2021. Cortés sees dance not only as an art form but also as a profound way of expressing himself and connecting with the world.
