Childhood and Early Life
Holley Hunter was born on March 20, 1958, in Conyers, Georgia, the youngest of seven children. Her father was a sporting goods salesman and a farmer, owning a 250-acre ranch. Hunter's parents encouraged her talent from an early age, and she landed her first role as Helen Keller in the fifth grade.

Education and Theatre Career
In 1976, Hunter moved to Pittsburgh and enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University to study drama. After graduating in 1980, she moved to New York City, where she met playwright Beth Henley in a stalled elevator. Hunter landed roles in several of Henley's gothic plays, including "Crimes of the Heart" and the romantic drama "Miss Firecracker."

Film Breakthrough
In 1982, Hunter relocated to Los Angeles. Her first major film role came in the Coen brothers' "Raising Arizona," which reportedly was written with her in mind. Hunter's star-making performance arrived in 1987, when she played news producer Jane Craig in James L. Brooks' "Broadcast News."
Critical Acclaim and Awards
In 1993, Hunter achieved worldwide recognition and an Academy Award for her portrayal of a mute young wife in Jane Campion's "The Piano."
