Biography of Hong Yi
Early Life and EducationHong Yi, also known as "Red" due to the Mandarin translation of her surname, is a Malaysian artist and architect. She was born and raised in Sabah, Malaysia, where her ancestors had fled from Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution. Hong Yi grew up hearing stories about China but did not have a particular interest in the country.
She pursued her education at the University of Melbourne, where she studied architecture. Later, she received a scholarship to study at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands, which allowed her to delve into European architecture and art.
Artistic Journey
After completing her studies, Hong Yi was offered a job in Shanghai, where she initially planned to stay for a year. However, she quickly fell in love with the country's culture, history, and people, which sparked her artistic passion. Inspired by her emotions, Hong Yi decided to create a series of portraits of famous Chinese personalities.
These portraits were unique as Hong Yi loved to experiment with unconventional materials. Instead of using traditional paintbrushes and paints, she utilized everyday materials such as coffee, sunflower seeds, bamboo sticks, and even socks. Her innovative approach to art gained attention and popularity both online and in prestigious newspapers.
Architectural Career
In addition to her artistic endeavors, Hong Yi also works as an architect in a firm. Her background in architecture allows her to appreciate and incorporate elements of European architecture into her work. Hong Yi finds fulfillment in both her architectural and artistic pursuits, as they allow her to create and express herself.
Throughout her career, Hong Yi has participated in the Australian National Competition, receiving awards for her outstanding presentations. Today, she is regarded as one of Malaysia's most renowned artists, with her works continuing to captivate audiences globally.
