Early Life and Family
Born in 822 to the Emperor Charlemagne and his concubine, Regina, Hugues was an illegitimate son. In order to prevent potential uprisings and claims to the throne, Emperor Louis the Pious, Charlemagne's son, had his brothers Dрого, Hugh, and Theodoric tonsured as monks.
Political Rise and Monastic Career
After a political crisis in 834, Louis rewarded his brothers for their loyalty. Hugh became Abbot of Charroux in Poitou and later Saint-Quentin. Impressed by his abilities, Louis appointed Hugh as Chancellor, a high-ranking position in the imperial administration. His service was commended with the Abbacy of Saint-Bertin in 836.
Supporter of Charles the Bald
Upon Louis' death, Hugh aligned himself with Louis's son, Charles the Bald. From 841 to 844, he served as the head of Charles' chancery, overseeing the production of official documents.
Demise
Hugh met his demise in battle against the Aquitanians on June 14, 844. His untimely end marked the end of his promising political and monastic career.
