Biography of Hugh Cornwell
Hugh Cornwell is an English musician, composer, guitarist, and vocalist. He was born on August 28, 1949, in London, England. He grew up in Tufnell Park and Kentish Town and attended William Ellis School in Highgate. During his school years, he played bass guitar in a band with Richard Thompson, who later became a member of Fairport Convention.
The Stranglers
In the late 60s, after earning a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Bristol University, Hugh went on to pursue a postgraduate degree at Lund University in Sweden. Soon after his arrival, he formed a band called Johnny Sox. In 1974, Hugh returned to England with his band, except for guitarist Hans Wärmling. They were later joined by drummer Jet Black. At some point, the future members of The Stranglers consisted only of Hugh and Jet, but they were soon joined by Jean Jacques Burnel and Hans Wärmling. The band eventually changed their name to The Stranglers.
Solo Career
By the time Hugh turned 30, British punk started to decline, which was one of the reasons he decided to pursue a solo career. In 1979, he released his first solo album, 'Nosferatu', with the help of Robert Williams, the drummer of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. In 1990, after 16 years with The Stranglers, Hugh recorded the album '10' with the band before announcing his departure.
Since then, Hugh Cornwell has released several solo albums, including 'Wolf' (1988), 'Wired' (1993), 'Guilty' (1997), 'Hi Fi' (2000), 'Footprints in the Desert' (2002), 'Mayday' (2002), 'In the Dock' (2003), and 'Beyond Elysian Fields' (2004). Some of these albums were released under different names and with changes in the tracklist in the United States.
Later Career
In 2006, a live album titled 'People Places Pieces' was released, accompanied by a disc called 'Dirty Dozen'. In 2008, Hugh offered his new album 'Hooverdam' for free download on his website. He also released a film called 'Blueprint', documenting the recording process of the album. In 2009, he embarked on a tour with drummer Chris Bell and bassist Caroline Campbell to support 'Hooverdam' and performed at the Glastonbury Festival.
In addition to his music career, Hugh Cornwell has written four books: 'Inside Information' (1980), 'The Stranglers – Song by Song' (2001), 'A Multitude of Sins' (2004), and 'Window on the World' (2011). He has also dabbled in acting, appearing in films such as 'Eat the Rich' (1987) and various television productions.
