Hugo Conte is an Argentine volleyball player who brought glory to his nation throughout his illustrious career.

Early Life and Career

Born in Buenos Aires, Conte initially pursued other sports such as football, basketball, and swimming. However, at age 12, he embraced volleyball and joined the "Gimnasia y Esgrima" club. He made his debut for the Argentine national team in 1980.

International Success

By 1982, Conte had become a key player for Argentina. Along with iconic figures like Waldo Kantor and Daniel Castellani, he helped his country win the bronze medal at the World Championships held on home soil. In 1984, the young Argentine team participated in their first Olympic Games, where Conte was honored as the Best Blocker. Four years later, they claimed another bronze medal at the Seoul Olympics.

Club Career in Europe

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Conte played primarily in European clubs. After a stint in France, he spent 15 seasons in Italy, where he was recognized as the league's Most Valuable Player three times. When returning to Argentina, he triumphed with various local clubs, including "Ferrocarril Oeste" and three others from 2001 to 2006.

Return to National Team

In 1999, after a near decade-long hiatus, Conte rejoined the national team alongside Waldo Kantor. Despite an unsuccessful World League campaign, he remained a valuable asset. Conte participated in his third Olympic Games in 2000 and the 2002 World Championships held in the same arena where Argentina had won bronze in 1982. His former teammates, Daniel Castellani and Carlos Getzelevich, served as coaches for the national team during this time.

Later Career and Coaching

Conte concluded his playing career with "Gimnasia y Esgrima," the club where it all began. He even shared the court with his son, Facundo, and nephew, Martin. In 2007, the two Contes moved to Italy and spent three more seasons together, with Facundo playing for various clubs and Hugo serving as a coach.

Since 2011, Conte has pursued a coaching career in Italy's Serie A2. He led "Pineto" and later "Covegliano" in the league.
