Hugo Eickhorn: A German Military Officer and SS Obersturmbannführer

Hugo Eickhorn was a German military officer and SS Obersturmbannführer. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his military achievements and exceptional bravery on the battlefield. Eickhorn was born on February 11, 1911, in Weilmünster, Germany.

Early Career

In 1937, at the age of 26, Eickhorn joined the ranks of the NSDAP (Nazi Party). In the same year, he also became a member of the SS-VT. By the start of World War II, he served in the 3rd SS Pionier Battalion, SS Division Totenkopf, an engineer battalion in the tank division 'Totenkopf'. He actively participated in the Polish campaign and showcased his skills and bravery on the battlefield. In the spring of 1940, Eickhorn became an officer and transferred to the SS-Junkerschule, a training school, in Bad Tölz. He was also involved in the formation of the 5th SS Pionier Battalion, SS Division Wiking, where he would later serve.

Rise in Rank and Recognition

In December 1940, Eickhorn completed his training, was promoted to Untersturmführer, and commanded one of the platoons in the division 'Wiking'. He continued to progress in his career, eventually becoming an Obersturmführer and then a Hauptsturmführer. Eickhorn was awarded the Knight's Cross in January 1943 for his exceptional courage displayed during a battle against Soviet forces. In February 1943, he became the commander of the 5th SS Pionier Battalion, a position he held until September 1943.

Later Years and Legacy

In September 1943, Eickhorn was seriously wounded and spent several months recovering until February 1944. Once he regained his strength, he joined one of the training and reserve engineer battalions in Dresden. In April 1944, he was promoted to Sturmbannführer, and in September 1944, he became an Obersturmbannführer. Eickhorn continued to lead this battalion until the end of World War II. After the war, he found employment in an industrial enterprise.

Hugo Eickhorn passed away on May 27, 1992, in Gedern, Germany. His military career and achievements remain a notable part of German military history.
