Early Life and Reign

Born between 1045 and 1055, Huguette was the son of Manasses III and Judith. His name first appears in a charter dated September 26, 1081, granting privileges to the Abbey of Rethel. This charter suggests that he inherited the county of Rethel upon his father's death that year. Subsequent charters refer to him in 1094 and 1097. His last recorded appearance is in a donation charter dated 1117.

Death and Succession

According to the necrology of the Abbey of Saint-Remi de Reims, Huguette died on December 28. William of Tyre claims that he was succeeded by his son Manasses, but other sources suggest that Manasses predeceased his father. Consequently, the county passed to his third son, Gervais, who had originally intended to pursue an ecclesiastical career, as his second son, Baldwin, had joined the Crusade and remained in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Marriage and Children

William of Tyre identifies Huguette's wife as Melisende, but provides no information about her lineage. However, in another section of his chronicle, William mentions that Joscelin de Courtenay, Count of Edessa, was the sister of Baldwin de Bourg's mother. Based on this, historians have deduced that Melisende was likely the daughter of Guy I de Montlhéry and Hodierna de Gometz-la-Ferté.
