American Futurist, Writer, and Educator

Lawrence Johnson is an American futurist, writer, and educator. Since 2001, he has held the position of Executive Director at the New Media Consortium, an international consortium of hundreds of universities, colleges, museums, research centers, and technology groups. One of the most well-known initiatives of the New Media Consortium is the Horizon Project, which Johnson has led since its inception in 2002. Each year, the project's staff presents a detailed report on the latest scientific discoveries and technological innovations. These materials are actively used by leaders of major universities and museums to help determine the priorities for further research activities. Rachel S. Smith joined the project in 2005, followed by Alan Levine in 2006. Johnson regularly organizes conferences, conferences, and large-scale research projects in various fields. He is particularly interested in the educational application of the latest technologies, such as visual literacy enhancement methods and gamified approaches to learning. Johnson also allocates significant funds for the development of communication methods, such as the project to create a three-dimensional Internet.

Virtual Worlds and Research

In April 2008, Johnson presented a detailed report on the nature and origins of virtual worlds to the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet. He obtained valuable information for this report from the New Media Consortium's experimental campus in the virtual world of Second Life, which he had launched two years earlier. Johnson has published several books, numerous articles, and led research in key sectors important for the country and the world. He is best known for his collaboration with the American Association of Community Colleges and the American Association of University Administrators.

Years of Service in Higher Education

In 2006, Johnson celebrated 25 years of service in American higher education. During most of this time, he has worked at the New Media Consortium. He has also made significant contributions as the Executive Director of Fox Valley Technical College and served in both large and small educational institutions. Over the past 25 years, he has gained a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of university activities. From 1993 to 1996, Johnson held the position of Vice President for Innovation in local colleges. Under his leadership, colleges across the country gained recognition from government officials, charitable foundations, and corporate leaders.

Leadership Roles and Advisory Boards

As the Director of the League Information Technology Initiative, Johnson led the largest educational technology conference of the time, the Conference of Information Technology. Currently, Lawrence Johnson serves on several boards of directors, including the Adobe Systems Higher Education Advisory Board and the Advanced Defense Learning Initiative National Advisory Board.
