Humpy Koneru: A Chess Prodigy
Humpy Koneru, born in 1987, is an Indian chess grandmaster who holds the distinction of being the former youngest woman grandmaster in chess history.
Early Achievements
Koneru's passion for chess ignited at the tender age of five. In 1997, at just nine, she emerged victorious in the World Under-10 Girls Championship. her success continued with championship titles in the Under-12 category in 1998, the Under-14 category in 2000, and the Under-20 category in 2001. Additionally, she captured the Asian Women's Chess Championship in 2003.
Grandmaster Breakthrough
In May 2002, Koneru made history by becoming the youngest woman ever to earn the title of grandmaster at the Budapest tournament, a record that stood until 2008 when Hou Yifan surpassed it.
Elite Ranking and World Championship Contender
In 2007, Koneru's impressive performance propelled her to a remarkable milestone: becoming the second woman ever to break the 2600 Elo rating mark, following in the footsteps of Judit Polgar. She participated in the Women's World Chess Championships in 2006 and 2008, reaching the second round and semifinals respectively.
Grand Prix Success and Current Standing
As of 2009-2010, Koneru competed in the FIDE Women's Grand Prix, claiming victory in the first stage. As of July 2010, she held the second-highest Elo rating among women chess players worldwide, a testament to her exceptional skill and enduring legacy in the realm of chess.
