Early Life and EducationHuseyn Javid, born on October 24, 1882, in Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, was a prominent figure in the Azerbaijani literary landscape of the early 20th century. His grandfather, Meshadi Quli, was an avid poetry enthusiast, while his father engaged in religious practices. Javid received his early education at a Mollakhane (religious school) before pursuing secular studies at the "Mektebi-terbiye" school.
Literary Journey
In 1905, Javid traveled to Istanbul, where he enrolled in the literary department of Istanbul University. This experience exposed him to Turkish writers and poets, shaping his literary sensibilities. Upon his return home in 1909, he dedicated himself to teaching Azerbaijani language and literature in various schools.
Literary Contributions
Javid's literary corpus encompasses poetry, drama, and philosophical writings. His poems, such as "Minuye Éyám" (Past Days, 1913), explored themes of social inequality and human suffering. His plays, including "Sheyda" (1913), "Sheykh Sanan" (1914), and "Devil" (1917-1918), depicted the struggle against tyranny and injustice.
Arrest and Imprisonment
Despite his literary achievements, Javid faced political persecution during the Stalinist era. Accused of counterrevolutionary activities, he was arrested in 1937 and imprisoned. Despite torture and coerced confessions, he remained steadfast in his innocence. In 1939, he was sentenced to eight years in a labor camp near Taishet, Siberia.
Rehabilitation and Legacy
Javid died in 1941 in the labor camp. His remains were exhumed and reburied in Nakhchivan in 1982. Posthumously, his works were rehabilitated, and he became a symbol of resilience and literary excellence.
Family and Personal Life
Huseyn Javid's son, Ertogrul Javid, also became a notable writer. His relatives included the prominent educator Alirza Rasizade and the former Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, Artur Rasizade.
