Hussein Arnous: A Biographical Sketch

Early Life and Education

Hussein Arnous was born in 1953 in the village of Et-Tah in the Maarret Al-Nu'man district of Idlib Governorate, Syria. He earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Aleppo in 1978.

Early Career

Arnous began his career in the engineering field. From 1983 to 1994, he held various positions at General Roads, a construction company, including branch manager in Idlib and general director. From 2004 to 2009, he led the General Directorate of Land Transport.

Government Service

Arnous entered government in 2002 as an assistant to the minister of transport. He subsequently served as governor of the provinces of Deir ez-Zor (2009-2011) and Quneitra (2011).

Ministerial Career

In 2013, Arnous joined the cabinet of Prime Minister Wael Al-Halk as minister of public works. He retained this position under Prime Minister Imad Khamis, who added the housing portfolio to his responsibilities in 2016. In November 2018, Arnous was appointed minister of water resources.

Prime Minister

On June 11, 2020, Arnous was appointed acting prime minister following the resignation of Imad Khamis. After the parliamentary elections on July 19, he was officially appointed prime minister by President Bashar al-Assad. Arnous formed a new government, which was approved by the president on August 30.

International Sanctions

In 2014, Hussein Arnous was placed on the sanctions lists of the United States and the European Union for his alleged role in the Syrian government's crackdown on protesters during the Syrian Civil War.
