Biography of Hussein Chalayan

Hussein Chalayan is a British designer of Turkish Cypriot origin. He is a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). His avant-garde collections are characterized by minimalism, while also provoking thoughts about what lies beneath the fabric. Chalayan reimagines the body and challenges traditional concepts of body zones. He never tries to make his clothes sexy, avoiding drawing attention to the obvious. Instead, he focuses on complex cutting techniques, intricate details, and unusual textured fabrics. It is not unusual to find materials like felted wool or double-faced cashmere in his designs. The themes of his collections often have a dark undertone, featuring vampires or graves. However, overall, Hussein Chalayan is a rare avant-gardist, creating garments that are exquisite, technically impeccable, and filled with pure feminine beauty.

Early Life and Education

Hussein Chalayan was born in 1970 in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. He attended the Turkish school Maarif College. He was the only child of divorced parents. His birth name is Huseyin Caglayan, but he later changed it. In 1978, his father, who wanted to obtain British citizenship, moved to the United Kingdom, while his mother remained in Cyprus. In 1982, at the age of twelve, Hussein joined his father in London, where his father had remarried. From a young age, Hussein did not dream of becoming a fashion designer. Instead, he envisioned himself as a pilot or a respected architect. He had planned to study architecture but changed his mind at the last minute. After completing school, Hussein became a student at the Warwickshire School of Arts and then continued his studies at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, one of the oldest fashion and design universities in the world.

Early Career and Recognition

Hussein Chalayan gained immediate recognition with his graduate collection titled 'The Tangent Flows.' This collection was made from fabric that Chalayan buried in his backyard with steel shavings before digging it up. Despite its impracticality, the collection was hailed as a sensation and was fully bought by the luxurious London store 'Browns,' which had launched the careers of many young designers, including John Galliano. In 1994, Hussein presented his first professional collection. In 1995, he won a competition organized by 'Absolut' vodka, which provided him with funding of around £28,000 to participate in London Fashion Week. That same year, he collaborated with pop star Björk, creating several costumes for her. In 1998, the young designer received the 'Designer of the Year' award at the annual 'British Fashion Awards.' His works continue to inspire and amaze leading avant-garde designers. In 2000, he was once again named the British Designer of the Year.

Later Career and Achievements

Beyond his own collections, Chalayan, known for avoiding conventional patterns and borrowing, collaborated with the New York knitwear label 'TSE' and established a new branch of 'Top Shop' in London. In 2001, due to financial difficulties, he temporarily closed his business and became the creative director of the respected British brand 'Asprey.' Later, he became a partner in the company 'Gibo Co Spa.' In August 2004, Chalayan announced a new phase in his career by opening his first store in Tokyo, where business thrived. In February 2008, he was appointed as the creative director of the German sportswear brand 'Puma.' Pieces from Chalayan's collections are exhibited in many museums worldwide, including the Contemporary Art Museum in Tokyo and London's Design Museum, Tate Modern, and Victoria & Albert Museum.
