Architect Turned Fashion Designer
He is often referred to as the architect of fashion, and there is no exaggeration in that. On the business card of the former student of Milan Polytechnic Institute, it still says: architect. Despite no longer designing buildings and cities. Source: Natalia Kurnenkova, Caravan of History magazine, October 1999.

A Hobby Turns into a Career
Of course, the young and promising architect Gianfranco Ferre, like many of his colleagues, never dreamed of being a fashion designer. He simply had a hobby - crafting bracelets and other trinkets at the family dinner table in the evenings. Ferre would give them as gifts to his architect, artist, and fashion designer friends. And, as often happens, at a prestigious dinner, one of the influential guests in the fashion world noticed his original creations: Ferre was offered to create a collection of leather accessories for a fashionable Milan store. Initially, he hesitated as it was exam time. But after persistent persuasion and long deliberation, he finally agreed. The collection sold out within a few days. (Perhaps since then, Ferre has had a special fondness for leather).
The Birth of a Fashion Empire
Doubts about whether to pursue architecture or design and modeling plagued Gianfranco Ferre until 1978. He finally made a decision and, together with a friend-entrepreneur, founded the company "Gianfranco Ferre S.p.A.", which would lay the foundation for a future fashion empire. The first women's collection, followed by the first men's collection, debuted in 1984, and the first fragrance for women, "Gianfranco Ferre," was introduced. The next five fragrances were created in parallel with new collections of women's and men's clothing, with the maestro himself designing the bottle for each one. (The latest fragrance for women, "GIANFRANCO FERRE 20," commemorating the 20th anniversary of the House of Ferre, was a resounding success.)
Achieving Worldwide Fame
In the midst of the denim craze, Ferre began working on denim collections, followed by an exclusive fur series. By the late 1980s, he was no longer just considered talented but was hailed as a genius. Ferre was gaining worldwide recognition at a rapid pace. At that time, it was uncommon for English, Italian, and American designers to be invited to the prestigious fashion houses in Paris. However, Ferre received a call from Bernard Arnault, the owner of the House of Christian Dior. Initially, Ferre was skeptical, thinking it was a prank by his friends. After all, five years prior, he had declined to collaborate with Dior as he was consumed with his own ideas. This time, he accepted the challenge and became the first foreigner to join the renowned French fashion house as a full-fledged artist, creating "Haute Couture" collections. To this day, Ferre's creations are considered the best under the Christian Dior label since its founder. Each new dress and accessory exuded the spirit and style of Dior, showcasing the same beauty and sophistication. After the premiere of Ferre's collection, people said, "Dior is back." The following day, Ferre was honored with the highest award in the fashion world, the "Golden Thimble."
Mastering the Art of Fashion
Ferre spent eight years at Dior before unexpectedly leaving the renowned building on Avenue Montaigne in 1997. Gianfranco Ferre left Dior to return to Ferre. At just 55 years old, Ferre had already become a master. His profession as an architect allowed him to prove to the world that harmony can be found between taste, style, and relevance. He created fashion not for three months but for years and decades.
