The Unbelievable Determination of Hyvon Ng'etich
Hyvon Ng'etich, a Kenyan athlete, gained attention from athletes around the world during the Austin Marathon. For a long time, Ng'etich seemed to be the favorite among the women. Unfortunately, she was unable to win, although her finish was truly impressive and incredible, showcasing her incredible willpower.

The Race and the Fall
Throughout most of the 2015 Austin Marathon, it seemed that victory would belong to the Kenyan athlete, Hyvon Ng'etich. The 29-year-old woman confidently led the race almost until the very end, making it seemingly impossible for anyone to snatch the win from her grasp. However, her own body unexpectedly dealt her a devastating blow just 50 meters away from the finish line as Ng'etich collapsed to the ground. While such falls are not uncommon in marathons, exhausted athletes are typically given medical assistance, and everything usually ends well.
The Incredible Decision to Crawl to the Finish Line
Rather than simply lying on the ground and waiting for help, Ng'etich was determined to finish the race on her own. Unfortunately, she couldn't get back on her feet as she lacked the strength to do so. Despite the immense pain displayed on her face, Ng'etich refused to give up. It seemed like an impossible situation, but she managed to find an extraordinary and seemingly crazy solution. Crawling on her knees and palms, and even using her forehead to push herself forward, Ng'etich completed the remaining meters to cross the finish line. The crowd reacted with great enthusiasm to her determination, cheering her on as much as possible. It was evident that Ng'etich was facing extreme difficulty, and even while moving on all fours, she occasionally had to stop to catch her breath. The option to quit was still available to her, yet she never took it. Despite the challenging progress, she achieved her goal.
The Limitations of Medical Assistance
Medical professionals closely monitored the situation, equipped with all the necessary tools and medications, including a wheelchair, just in case. However, neither the authorities nor the medical team intervened prematurely, as any assistance from them would have meant instant disqualification for Ng'etich. Some might argue that considering sports results in such a situation is absurd. Nevertheless, for Ng'etich, crossing the finish line meant a great deal, and nobody had the right to take away her opportunity to win on her own, even with the best intentions. "Thank God, I finished," Ng'etich said, finally overcoming the desired finish line. Later, she admitted that she barely remembered the last 2 kilometers. What she did recall was her incredible desire to finish.
The Unforgettable Achievement
The last 2 kilometers seemed to be the most difficult for the Kenyan runner. It was during this stretch that Ng'etich lost her position, conceding the victory to another runner. She ran noticeably worse, frequently stumbling and displaying visible weakness. The organizers of the event commented on the situation, with race director John Conley openly stating that he had never seen anything like it in his 43 years of involvement in sports. Conley praised Ng'etich for her incredible bravery.
In the end, Ng'etich did not receive first place. Cynthia Jerop, another Kenyan, took the top spot among women with a time of 2:54:21, followed by American runner Hannah Steffan with a time of 3:03:69. However, Ng'etich earned a well-deserved bronze medal, completing the course in 3:04:02. In addition, she was awarded an additional cash prize equal to the second-place prize. Ng'etich's victory is not only an impressive sporting achievement, but it is also a testament to her incredible willpower and determination. Despite almost complete physical exhaustion, she managed to achieve a unique result.
