Yakov Georgievich Testelets: A Leading Linguist in Typology and Syntax

Early Life and Education

Yakov Georgievich Testelets was born on September 12, 1958, in Moscow, Russia. He graduated from the Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics at Moscow State University in 1980. He participated in numerous linguistic expeditions to Dagestan, studying languages such as Bezhta and Budukh. His diploma thesis, supervised by A. E. Kibrik, focused on the typology of spatial declension systems in Dagestanian languages.

Research at the Institute of Linguistics, RAS

In 1981, Testelets began working at the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), where he is currently a leading research associate in the Department of Linguistic Typology and Comparative Linguistics. In 1986, he defended his PhD thesis on "Ergative Construction and Ergative-like Construction."

Teaching at RGGU

Since 1998, Testelets has also been teaching at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU), where he has organized several field research expeditions. His courses on "Modern Syntactic Theories" and "Typology of Simple Sentences" have been instrumental in the development of his 2001 textbook "Introduction to General Syntax."

Doctoral Dissertation and Research Interests

In 2003, Testelets obtained his D.Sc. degree in Linguistics from RGGU with a dissertation on "Grammatical Hierarchies and Typology of the Sentence." His research interests include general syntax, morphological and syntactic typology, and the Kartvelian, Nakh-Dagestan, Abkhaz-Adyghe, and Australian languages.

Contributions to Linguistic Studies

Testelets has authored and co-authored several grammatical descriptions, including that of Bezhta and Tsakhur. He has made significant contributions to the reconstruction of Proto-Chechen and Proto-Kartvelian vocalism, as well as the system of consonant clusters and sibilants in Proto-Kartvelian. His work on word order and constituent structure in noun phrases (Kartvelian and Dagestan) and the typology of ergative-like constructions (Kartvelian, Nakh-Dagestan, Indo-Iranian, and Australian) has greatly advanced the field.

Bible Translation and Religious Studies

In addition to his linguistic research, Testelets is actively involved in the translation of the Bible into modern languages, including those of the Caucasus. He also collaborates with the journal "Alpha and Omega," where he publishes annotated reviews of contemporary Western works on biblical studies from a linguistic and theological perspective.
