Ibrahim Khan, Ruler of Karabakh
Ibrahim Khan, a renowned military leader and general lieutenant in the Russian army, served as the Khan of Karabakh, one of the most powerful Azerbaijani khanates.
Early Years and Rise to Power
Ibrahim Khan was born into a distinguished family. His father, Panah Ali Khan, was the founder of the Karabakh Khanate. Ibrahim Khan rose to power after the assassination of Nader Shah in 1747. With a small force of 200 horsemen, he established himself as the independent Khan of Karabakh.
Consolidation of Power and Alliances
Ibrahim Khan's reign was marked by efforts to consolidate his power and secure alliances. He strategically arranged his sister's marriage to Omar Khan, the Avar ruler, establishing diplomatic ties. He also established connections with neighboring khanates, often exerting influence over them.
Conflict with Kuban Khanate
In the 1770s, Karabakh faced a military threat from Fatali Khan of the Kuban Khanate, who sought to expand his territory. Ibrahim Khan formed an alliance with the Georgian King Erekle II, which proved crucial in repelling Fatali Khan's invasions.
Negotiations with Russia
Recognizing the instability in the region, Ibrahim Khan secretly negotiated with Russia for the potential annexation of Karabakh. In 1783-1784, these negotiations gained momentum.
Iranian Invasions and Appeal for Russian Protection
In the late 18th century, Karabakh faced devastating invasions from Iranian forces led by Agha Mohammad Khan. Desperate for assistance, Ibrahim Khan once again sought protection from Russia.
Annexation of Karabakh by Russia
In 1805, a treaty was signed that brought Karabakh under the rule of the Russian Empire. Ibrahim Khan continued his father's controversial policy towards Armenian meliks, leading to the mass exodus of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh.
Legacy
Ibrahim Khan left a lasting mark on Karabakh and Azerbaijan. He expanded the khanate's power and influence through strategic alliances and military prowess. However, his policies towards Armenians remain a source of debate.
