Rancourous Revolutionary: A Biography of Ibrahim Kaypakkaya
Early LifeIbrahim Kaypakkaya, born in 1949 in the impoverished Turkish province of Çorum, hailed from humble beginnings. He received his teaching credentials after his secondary education in Central Anatolia before enrolling in the Faculty of Physics at Istanbul University.
Embracing Revolutionary Ideals
During his university years, Kaypakkaya encountered revolutionary ideologies and joined the Turkish Workers and Peasants Revolutionary Party (TİKP). His activism against the arrival of the US Sixth Fleet in Turkey led to his expulsion from the university in November 1968.
The Revolutionary Press
Subsequently, Kaypakkaya worked for the newspaper "İşçi ve Köylü" ("Worker and Peasant") and contributed to the journals "Aydınlık" ("Enlightenment") and "Türk Solu" ("Turkish Left").
Founding the TKP/ML
In 1971, Kaypakkaya broke away from the TİKP and established the Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist-Leninist (TKP/ML). Notably, he was instrumental in raising awareness of the Kurdish national question.
Armed Resistance and Tragic End
In response to the Turkish government's crackdown on communist movements following the 1971 military memorandum, Kaypakkaya's TKP/ML engaged in armed resistance.
After surviving an ambush in the mountainous region of Tunceli on January 24, 1973, Kaypakkaya sought refuge in a nearby village. However, he was betrayed and captured within days. For three and a half months, he endured horrific torture.
Execution and Legacy
On May 18, 1973, Kaypakkaya was executed in prison before he could even stand trial. His brutal demise transformed him into an enduring icon and symbol for the Turkish left.
