Idwal I ap Cadwaladr

Idwal I ap Cadwaladr reigned as King of Gwynedd from 682 to 720. He was the son of Cadwaladr ap Cadwallon and earned the nickname "the Buck of the Doe" due to his diminutive stature and frail physique.

King of Gwynedd

Upon his father's death in 682, either from plague or in battle, Idwal ascended to the throne. Despite his father possibly dying in 664 and being confused with Cædwalla, Idwal's rule was relatively peaceful.

Gwynedd avoided major conflicts, except for occasional raids into Mercia alongside the kings of Powys. It is speculated that Idwal may be mentioned as Iuor in Geoffrey of Monmouth's "Historia Regum Britanniae," sent by Cadwaladr to prepare for his return to Gwynedd.
