Antonov and his students have made significant contributions to medical science, particularly in understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of acute cerebrovascular disorders. Their research has also focused on the etiopathogenic mechanisms, clinical polymorphism, and the development of new diagnostic, treatment, and prevention methods for peripheral nervous system diseases. Antonov's team extensively studied vertebral disorders of the peripheral nervous system. Collaborating with B.V. Drivotinov and V.Ya. Latysheva, they proposed the concept of the role of autoimmune processes and vascular factors in the development of spinal osteochondrosis and its clinical manifestations. Antonov also developed a clinical classification of peripheral nervous system diseases, which was approved by the USSR Ministry of Health in 1987 for implementation in healthcare practices.
