Early Life and EducationIgnatz Dörfler was born in Austria, where he developed a passion for botany at a young age. He pursued his botanical studies at the University of Vienna, where he excelled in the field.
Career as a Curator
Upon graduating, Dörfler became the curator of public exhibitions at the Botanical Institute of the University of Vienna, a position he held from 1915 to 1937. In this role, he curated exhibitions and managed the institute's collections.
Botanical Interests
Dörfler's botanical interests spanned a wide range of plants, including ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. He had a particular interest in the flora of Albania and Macedonia, where he conducted extensive research.
Autograph Collection
In addition to his botanical work, Dörfler was an avid collector of autographs and original letters from botanists. He amassed an extensive collection, which he later sold to Uppsala University in Sweden after World War I.
Legacy
Dörfler's contributions to botany have been widely recognized. He was honored by having a plant endemic to Albania named after him: Petasites doerfleri Hayek, 1917, commonly known as Dörfler's Butterbur. Several other Balkan plants also bear his name.
