Biography of Count Franz Xaver Anton Johann von Hardegg
Early CareerFranz Xaver Anton Johann von Hardegg was born in Vienna on July 30th, 1772. At the tender age of sixteen, he joined the campaign against the Turks under General Laudon. During the wars of the First Coalition, he held the rank of Rittmeister and distinguished himself in the Battle of Jemappes, among other engagements.
Napoleonic Wars
In the campaign of 1809, Hardegg participated as a Major General in the Battle of Aspern and fought valiantly at the Battle of Wagram, where he defended the village of Baumersdorf. In recognition of his skills, he was promoted to Feldmarschall-Leutnant in 1813. At the Battle of Leipzig, where he commanded the vanguard of the left wing, Hardegg was seriously wounded in the head.
Russian Honors and Service
On December 10th, 1813, Emperor Alexander I of Russia bestowed upon Hardegg the Order of St. George, 3rd Class. In 1814, he commanded a division that fought in numerous battles and particularly distinguished itself at Moret against General Montbrun. During the Congress of Vienna, Hardegg represented the Austrian government to Alexander I.
Later Career
From 1829, Hardegg served as Commandant of Linz and later commanded troops in Transylvania. In 1831, he was promoted to General of the Cavalry and appointed President of the War Council (Hofkriegsrat). Among his awards were the Order of Maria Theresa and the Russian Order of St. Alexander Nevsky (January 8th, 1831).
Death
Franz Xaver Anton Johann von Hardegg passed away in Vienna on February 17th, 1848.
