Early Career and Military Accomplishments
Louis-Eugène Cavaignac was born on November 15, 1802, in Paris, France. In 1824, he graduated from the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr and received his first officer's rank. He distinguished himself in battles, including the siege of Antwerp in 1832 and the Algerian campaign in 1836. In 1844, he achieved the rank of Divisional General.
Governor-General of Algeria and Political Involvements
On July 1, 1847, Cavaignac was appointed Governor-General of Algeria. However, he was forced to resign this post in October due to political disagreements. During the French Revolution of 1848, he commanded a column against insurgents but remained inactive, recognizing the strength of the uprising.
Head of the French Army and Political Career
After the overthrow of King Louis-Philippe, Cavaignac became the head of the French army. He fought against the June Uprising, sustaining severe injuries. He subsequently served in the National Assembly, where he aligned himself with the moderate Republicans. He held the positions of Vice-President of the Constituent and Legislative Assemblies.
Imprisonment and Exile
Following the coup d'état of December 2, 1851, Cavaignac was imprisoned along with other Republican leaders. He was released but forced to leave France and lived in exile in Brussels. After the amnesty was declared, he returned to France in 1859.
Death and Legacy
Louis-Eugène Cavaignac died on October 28, 1857, in his hometown of Gournay-sur-Marne, France. He is remembered as a skilled military commander and a moderate Republican who played a significant role in the events of the 19th century.
