Igor "Ganya" Gankevich, born on June 7, 1962, in Odessa, Ukraine, was an influential rock musician, songwriter, and poet who left an enduring legacy in the world of music.
Forming "Bastion" and Rising to Fame
In the early 1980s, Gankevich founded the band "Illusion," which later evolved into "Bastion" in 1984. The band gained national recognition after appearing in the film "Diskjockey" and performing at the prestigious "SyRok-88" festival in Moscow. Their iconic songs "In Memory of the Victims of Perestroika" and "Remember, There Were Crabs in Odessa..." resonated deeply with audiences.
"Walk Through Odessa": An Enduring Anthem
One of Gankevich's most famous compositions was "Walk Through Odessa," a timeless song that became synonymous with his band and the city of Odessa. While often attributed to Sergey Chigrakov, the song was originally written and performed by Gankevich.
Co-Founding the Odessa Rock Club

Four years after his passing, a compilation album titled "Pikey Waistcoats" was released, featuring live and studio recordings of "Bastion" songs. The album was funded and distributed by Gankevich's son, Alexei.
